Fatal Rollover Crash on Interstate 15 South of Deer Springs Road

ESCONDIDO, Calif.- On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at approximately 6:35 a.m., officers from the California Highway Patrol-Oceanside Area Office responded to reports of a rollover traffic collision on northbound Interstate 15, south of Deer Springs Road, in unincorporated Escondido.

A 19-year-old driver, from Murrieta was driving a Chevrolet Silverado in an unknown northbound lane of Interstate 15. A 24-year-old driver from Descanso was driving a Ford F-150 in the #2 northbound lane of Interstate 15. For reasons still under investigation, the two pickup trucks collided into one another. The Ford F-150 spun out and came to rest in the center divider, while the Chevrolet veered to the right shoulder where it overturned numerous times, coming to rest upon its wheels on the right shoulder.

The California Highway Patrol and fire/paramedics responded to the scene. Unfortunately, while at the scene, the driver of the Chevrolet succumbed to his injuries. A 19-year-old female passenger in the Chevrolet was transported to a local area hospital with major non-life threating injuries. There were no injuries reported by the driver of the Ford. Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to have played a factor in this collision.

The investigation is ongoing, and the CHP is asking anyone who has information or may have witnessed this incident to contact the Oceanside Area CHP office at (760) 643-3400. The identity of the deceased will be released through the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
