Three students from Coastal Academy competed in the 2018 California Science and Engineering Fair. To qualify for this event, these students entered their project into the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair and were judged to be in the top 10% of all projects entered.

In the state competition, student Aaron McKeeman received 2nd place in the Alternative Energy category with his project, “SwellSpark Turns Ocean Swells into Electric Energy”. Anna Nunez received 3rd place in the Behavioral & Social Sciences category with her project, “Education and Exposure to Overcome Medical Phobia.” Elizabeth Cullum competed in the Applied Mechanics and Structures category with her project, “Can You Make a Hurricane Proof House”?

Coastal Academy is very proud of these students. Each of them chose a project that provides a solution to a real-world problem. They worked extensively on developing these projects and they will also compete in this year’s National Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) competition.
