CARLSBAD — Three decades ago, a dream was realized and became a cultural staple in Carlsbad Village.

New Village Arts put on its first performance in the wake of 9/11 thanks to the efforts of co-founder Kristianne Kurner, whose dream it was to own and operate a professional theater. Now, the nonprofit is preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

The 100-seat theater has grown from plucky underdog to a regional force in the arts. They’ve premiered some of the biggest plays and musicals outside New York and London, won awards, and served as a launchpad for many of the region’s best actors and performers.

The 25th season kicks off on July 1 (NVA runs on its fiscal year and its official anniversary is April 26), but Kurner is planning a big release of the upcoming season during NVA’s Silver Gala on May 9 at Scratch Media. The gala will also feature recognition of 25 people positively affecting the arts in Carlsbad and North County.
