VISTA, Calif. (February 25, 2026) – Housing advocates, local leaders, and community partners will gather on February 25, to celebrate the grand opening of La Sábila Apartments, a new affordable housing community for seniors aged 55+ located near the City of Vista in unincorporated San Diego County.

Developed by the local nonprofit Wakeland Housing, La Sábila will provide 85 affordable homes, including 42 apartments set aside for seniors exiting homelessness, offering a vital new resource at a time when rising housing costs and limited fixed incomes are placing increasing pressure on older adults across North San Diego County.

“La Sábila is an incredible resource for seniors at a time when the housing crisis is all around us,” says Rebecca Louie, CEO of Wakeland Housing. “More than one-third of the nearly 10,000 people experiencing homelessness in San Diego are seniors, many of whom are struggling with rising housing costs, medical expenses, food insecurity, and profound loneliness. La Sábila is truly a game changer for seniors in North County. With on-site, A-to-Z medical services, opportunities for connection through workshops and classes, including cooking and exercise, and a built-in community where residents can get to know and support one another, this development will help seniors maintain their independence, age with dignity, and truly thrive.”

Designed to support seniors as they age, La Sábila will combine high-quality affordable housing with onsite healthcare services, resident support, and thoughtfully designed amenities that promote safety, wellness, and connection.

Housing That Meets the Urgent Needs of Seniors

La Sábila will serve low-income seniors earning between 30% and 60% of Area Median Income, with residents paying approximately 30% of their income toward rent, helping free up limited resources for essentials such as food, transportation, and healthcare. Rents will range from approximately $868 to $1,590, with County-provided Project-Based Voucher providing rent subsidies for very low-income residents in 42 apartments.

Specialized Senior Care and Onsite Services

Purpose-built for seniors, La Sábila will provide services-enriched housing through partnerships with West PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) and San Diego County Health and Human Services Behavioral Health Services.

West PACE will offer onsite health and wellness programming, educational classes, and social activities available to all residents, while County-contracted service providers will deliver case management and behavioral health services to residents with higher support needs. This integrated model will help residents maintain independence, manage chronic conditions, and remain connected to the community as they age.

Secure, Supportive Living Environment

La Sábila is tailored to the needs of seniors and includes controlled access, 24-hour monitoring, and an onsite manager, creating a setting where residents can feel safe, supported, and connected to one another.

Designed by DAHLIN Architecture and built by Sun Country Builders, the 5.5-acre community features a two-story, U-shaped residential building with two elevators connected by walkways and shared community spaces that encourage interaction enhanced by onsite programming and events. The site’s pedestrian-friendly layout and accessible design ensure residents of varying mobility levels can enjoy every aspect of the property.

Wellness-Focused Design That Encourages Connection

At the heart of La Sábila is a landscaped central courtyard with outdoor seating, walking paths, and resident gathering areas designed to promote physical activity and social engagement.

The property’s 1,015-square-foot community room includes a kitchen, computer lab, and space for workshops, classes, and community events, supporting both everyday connection and organized programming. Additional amenities include laundry facilities on each floor, outdoor BBQ and game areas, and accessible pathways throughout the site.

Designed to GreenPoint Rated standards, La Sábila incorporates energy-efficient appliances, water-conserving fixtures, durable materials, and water-wise landscaping to ensure long-term sustainability and lower operating costs.

Built Through Strong Public-Private Partnerships

La Sábila was made possible through a collaborative public-private financing structure, with funding support from the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, Freddie Mac, Wells Fargo Bank, and the County of San Diego. Total development costs were approximately $48.5 million.
