CARLSBAD, Calif. – On March 17, 2026, at approximately 11:08 p.m., officers with the Carlsbad Police Department responded to the 4400 block of Carlsbad Boulevard for a reported traffic collision.
As officers were responding, additional information was received that one of the involved drivers was in possession of a firearm. During an apparent attempt by that individual to handle the firearm, the firearm discharged. No individuals were struck by the gunfire, and no gunshot-related injuries have been reported.
Both drivers were transported to a local hospital for injuries related to the collision. One individual was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury, being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, and carrying a loaded firearm in public. The individual remains under police supervision while receiving medical treatment.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and officers are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding what occurred.
