What started as a friendly competition among firefighter home brewers has grown into one of North County’s most unique charity fundraisers.
The Vista Firefighters Association’s (VFFA Local 4107) Hop Highway Brew-Off brings together firefighters from departments across Southern California to compete for bragging rights, a coveted championship fire helmet, and, most importantly, to raise money for people facing difficult circumstances. The event has become one of two signature annual fundraisers hosted by the Vista Firefighters Association’s charity committee.
According to the association, the Brew-Off features firefighter home brewers representing their departments in a beer-tasting competition judged by both the public and professional brewers. Funds raised support local beneficiaries and charitable causes throughout the community.
The next Hop Highway Brew-Off is scheduled for June 28, 2026. While organizers have not yet publicly announced this year’s beneficiary or venue, the event is expected to continue its tradition of supporting individuals and families facing medical or financial hardships.
The Brew-Off’s charitable mission has made a significant impact over the years. The Vista Firefighters Association says it has donated thousands of dollars to families dealing with medical emergencies, funeral expenses, and disaster recovery efforts. The organization also supports numerous nonprofits, including the Burn Institute, Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Boys & Girls Club of Vista, and Wounded Warrior Project.
Today, the Hop Highway Brew-Off remains a distinctly North County event where firefighters, craft beer enthusiasts, and community members gather for a common cause. Beyond the competition, the event reflects the service-minded culture of local firefighters, who continue to help others long after emergency calls are over.
