Carlsbad Police Make Arrest in Stabbing Case from March 1, 2026

CARLSBAD, Calif. — On March 1st, 2026, at approximately 01:48 a.m., officers received a report of a fight involving a group of individuals in the 300 block of Grand Avenue. The incident began on the sidewalk on the south side of Grand Avenue at the train tracks. This fight escalated into a violent confrontation, with one male victim sustaining stab wounds to his torso.

Witnesses described a Hispanic male adult as the stabbing suspect. The suspect fled the area prior to police arrival. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries were life-threatening; however, he was later reported by hospital staff to be in stable condition.

This case began with limited information, with only a description of the suspect, his clothing, and direction of travel. Following an investigation over the following months, detectives from the Carlsbad Police Department’s Crimes of Violence Unit identified the suspect as 21-year-old Angel Renteria of Oceanside, California. Renteria was found to be in jail custody on an unrelated charge. On June 9th, 2026, while Renteria was in custody, detectives added the following additional charges related to the stabbing:

245 (A)(1) PC, Assault with Deadly Weapon
203 PC, Mayhem
186.22 (A) Participate in a Criminal Street Gang
