Solutions for Change Enters New Chapter Focused on Campus Renewal, Economic Mobility, and Generational Impact

The Vista-based nonprofit Solutions for Change, founded in 1999, has long been known for helping families move beyond homelessness through a highly accountable, sobriety-based residential program. Today, the organization is building on that legacy while strengthening its campus, expanding enrichment programs, deepening community relationships, and broadening its long-term impact.

“Solutions for Change is undergoing a renaissance,” said Aaron Byzak, CEO of Solutions for Change. “We are overcoming inherited and historic challenges while building on the strengths that have made this organization special for more than two decades. We are charting a path forward that expands our reach, deepens our impact, and positions Solutions to serve families across generations.”

Byzak stepped into the interim CEO role on January 5 and, after four months, was unanimously selected by the board of directors to serve as the organization’s permanent CEO. During that time, Solutions has been working to sharpen its strategic direction, strengthen core operations, and reconnect with the community in a more intentional way.

Byzak brings three decades of experience in healthcare leadership, public affairs, behavioral health advocacy, workforce development, nonprofit strategy, and community engagement. Before joining Solutions, he held senior executive roles in regional healthcare, taught strategic career planning to thousands of students and professionals, and led cross-sector initiatives focused on drug and alcohol prevention, behavioral health, workforce pathways, and community impact. He said that experience fits naturally with Solutions’ longstanding commitment to accountability, family stability, economic mobility, and long-term generational change.

A significant part of the work ahead is relational. Solutions is building upon longstanding relationships with existing donors, introducing its renewed vision to new stakeholders, and rebuilding partnerships that may have fallen off in the past.

“Relationships are central to this work,” Byzak said. “There are people who have loved and supported Solutions for years, and we want them to know how deeply valued they are. There are also new partners who are just beginning to learn what this organization does and why it matters. And, candidly, there are relationships that may have drifted over time. We are working to rebuild those with humility, clarity, and a shared commitment to the families we serve.”

Among the most visible changes is a major remodel of the Solutions for Change campus. Improvements are already underway to address deferred maintenance and create a more welcoming, functional, and mission-aligned environment for students, staff, volunteers, and community partners. The campus renewal includes upgrades to learning spaces, common areas, outdoor activity areas, and program facilities.

The organization is also launching two major centers that will help define its next phase of impact.

The Chen Center for Transformational Impact at Solutions Academy, which will officially open in late July, will support the continued evolution of Solutions Academy, the organization’s core residential education and personal development program. Solutions is strengthening its curriculum with new classes, leadership development, life skills training, family enrichment, and expanded opportunities for current students, graduates, and their children.

A new Center for Economic Mobility & Workforce Development, operating through Solutions Enterprise, will focus on helping students, graduates, and their older children connect with meaningful employment, career pathways, paid training opportunities, and local employers who are willing to provide warm handoffs into the workforce.

Solutions is currently engaging local businesses, healthcare organizations, trade groups, and other industry partners to create pathways into jobs and careers. The goal is to move beyond simply helping people find employment and instead create real access to economic mobility.

“We are talking with employers who understand that talent is everywhere, but access is not,” Byzak said. “The families we serve are not lacking potential. What they are lacking is doors that open, relationships that help them step through it, and the support to keep moving once they do.”

The expanded focus on enrichment programs is central to the organization’s future. Solutions is working to broaden opportunities for adults and children alike, recognizing that homelessness is often tied to deeper patterns of generational poverty, addiction, trauma, and instability. Those patterns are not broken through housing alone. They require education, accountability, community, opportunity, and a consistent investment in the whole family.

“If we help a parent rebuild their life but miss what is happening with their children, then we have missed a major part of the opportunity,” Byzak said.

“This work has to be generational. We want the children of our students and graduates to see a different future and believe it can belong to them.”

Jennifer Pankey, Vice President of Transformational Impact at Solutions for Change, said that focus reflects the difference between short-term activity and lasting change.

Pankey is both a longtime Solutions employee and a graduate of the program, giving her a unique perspective on the organization’s impact.

“In a system that often rewards outputs, Solutions for Change is focused on long-term outcomes,” Pankey said. “It is not enough to count how many people were served on a spreadsheet. The real question is whether families are healing, whether parents are rebuilding their lives, whether children are seeing a different future, and whether that change lasts.”

As Solutions expands enrichment programs for adults and children, Pankey said the goal is to strengthen the entire family, not just respond to the immediate crisis of homelessness.

“When we invest in both parents and children, we are not just helping one person move forward,” Pankey said. “We are helping interrupt patterns that can carry from one generation to the next. That is the deeper work, and it is why this next chapter matters so much.”

The organization is also preparing for its annual fundraising gala, which will take place on September 19, 2026, at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. The “Boots & Bling” themed event will raise support for Solutions’ programs and provide an opportunity to share more about the organization’s renewed direction, campus improvements, and expanding initiatives. Solutions is also expected to announce the naming gift for its new Center for Economic Mobility & Workforce Development at the gala.

Regarding Green Oak Ranch, Solutions recently completed an exit from its lease and option agreement related to that property. The decision allows the organization to focus more directly on its Vista campus, its existing residential properties, and the initiatives already underway to strengthen programs and serve families. Solutions has indicated that its mission remains unchanged, but that the organization’s current direction requires clarity, focus, and disciplined execution.

“Green Oak was an ambitious idea, but our responsibility now is to focus on the work directly in front of us,” Byzak said. “That means strengthening the campus, supporting our students, and making sure our resources are aligned with the families we serve today.”

Solutions for Change continues to operate from the belief that homelessness is not solved by housing alone. While many programs focus primarily on housing placement, Solutions works with families who are ready to engage in a structured, high-accountability environment aimed at long-term transformation.

“This is hard work,” Byzak said. “There are no shortcuts, and there is no magic bullet for making trauma, addiction, poverty, or family instability disappear overnight. But there is a path. Families have walked that path at Solutions for more than two decades, and our job now is to strengthen it for the next generation.”

The organization is inviting donors, volunteers, employers, civic leaders, service clubs, faith communities, businesses, and community members to be part of this work.

“We are asking the community to come see what is happening at Solutions for Change,” Byzak said. “Tour the campus. Meet our team. Learn about the families we serve. Partner with us. Invest in this work. Help us open doors for parents and children who are doing the hard work of changing the trajectory of their lives.”

For Byzak, this chapter is both a continuation and a renewal of the organization’s original promise.

“Solutions for Change has always been about helping families overcome,” he said. “Now we are building the next version of that promise — one that honors the organization’s history, responds to the needs of this moment, and creates a stronger future for the families we serve.”
