Column: New Orleans, gators and the sweet chaos of the Big Easy

My girlfriend and I spent a much-needed weekend away in the Big Easy for Halloween, All Saints’ Day and Día de los Muertos.

Oh, and an epic trip into the bayou swamp with one of the most Louisiana men ever.

I had never been to New Orleans, but like so many, I’ve heard the stories. Bourbon Street, chaos, drunkenness, beads, live music, parades and one of the best food scenes in the country and the world.

An early arrival gave us most of Halloween to explore the bigger hotspots in New Orleans with just a brief venture on Bourbon Street. We preferred to wander around Jackson Square and Frenchman Street, where we found beer, jazz and one of the most energetic vibes I’ve experienced.

We jammed to an electric jazz scene at the Spotted Cat, enjoyed our libations, and then, at the incredibly late hour of 7 p.m., we made a beeline for Dat Dog, where my girlfriend gobbled down a gator dog while I kept it classic. After our “late-night” eats, we made the odious journey back to the hotel, bobbing and weaving through hordes of people on Frenchman and Bourbon streets.
