According to SANDAG’s recently published 2018 Mid-Year Crime Bulletin (September), the overall crime rate in the City of Vista is 5 percent lower than mid-year 2017; violent crime is down 18 percent; and property crime is down 2 percent. The annualized FBI Index Violent Crime rates per 1,000 population in Vista experienced a 21 percent decrease over 2014/2018 and an 18 percent decrease in 2017/18. In working to keep this downward trend in the crime rate, the City Council recently approved an additional Sheriff’s deputy to help patrol the city of Vista.

“I am pleased that crime is still heading in a downward trend again this year,” said Mayor Judy Ritter. “We appreciate that the Vista Sheriff’s Department is using both good old fashioned police work and the use of new technologies in keeping our city safe.”

SANDAG’s Mid-Year Crime Bulletin shows the San Diego region’s violent crime rate was 2 percent higher at mid-year 2018, compared to mid-year 2017, with increases in the number of reported rapes and aggravated assaults, but fewer homicides and robberies. The region’s property crime rate was 3 percent lower at mid-year 2018 compared to mid-year 2017, with a 13 percent drop in the number of reported burglaries and 3 percent drop in the number of motor vehicle thefts.

Each year, SANDAG compiles and analyzes regional crime data using FBI Index crime information provided by local law enforcement agencies, as well as crime data obtained from the Automated Regional Justice Information System (ARJIS). The FBI Index includes four violent offenses (willful homicide, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) and three types of property crime (burglary, larceny theft, and motor vehicle theft).

The Crime in the San Diego Region annual report is published in April. Other crime information also is compiled, analyzed, and published throughout the year. See the Crime in San Diego Region Mid-Year 2018 Statistics full report here.
