Cougars Drop CCAA Opener at Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team fell 91-62 in its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener at Cal State East Bay on Saturday afternoon in Pioneer Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED •After CSUSM began the game with a 5-0 lead, East Bay went on an 18-0 run to go up 18-5 with 13:34 remaining in the first half.
•The Cougars narrowed the gap to six points at 24-18 with a 10-2 run late in the period.
•After 20 minutes, CSUSM went to the locker room with a 37-29 deficit.
•CSUSM shot 33.3 percent (8-of-24) in the first period while East Bay shot 45.2 percent (14-of-31) and held a 24-11 rebound advantage.
•Cantwell led the Cougars with eight points in the first half while Elliott led both sides with seven rebounds.
•CSUSM was outscored 54-33 in the second half.
•The Pioneers were 15-of-30 from the field in the second period while going 7-of-10 from beyond the arc.
•The Cougars shot 44.4 percent (12-of-27) in the second half, but they committed 14 more fouls than the first half (7).

FAST BREAKS •CSUSM drops to 3-4 (0-1 CCAA) while East Bay improves to 5-1 (0-1 CCAA)
•This was the Cougars’ first-ever loss to the Pioneers in seven games.
•Elliott notched his second consecutive double-double and third of the season.
•Fuller has now led the Cougars in points in five-of-seven games this season.
•East Bay’s Nai Carlisle led the game with 25 points.
