In a tradition that stretches back for years, students who received scholarships from The Woman’s Club of Vista GFWC and staff representatives joined the Club for the annual Scholarships Luncheon in June.
The Club awarded a total of $12,000 in scholarships to students at six Vista high schools in 2019 – Maj. Gen. Raymond Murray High, Guajome Park Academy, Rancho Buena Vista High, Vista High, Mission Vista High, and North County Trade Tech High. Members of the Club presented the scholarships at the schools.
Introduced by member Linda Story, the adult representatives from the schools shared about their students’ achievements – their GPA’s, their community involvement – but then the students themselves were able to thank the Club members for their scholarship support and speak about their challenges, successes, and plans for the future. Students shared their plans to attend 4-year universities like UCSD and UCLA or local community colleges. Some students are the first in their families to graduate from high school, and others overcame adversities to turn their lives around and shine with achievements.
Scholarship winners from Vista High School were Samantha Patterson, Sophia Gonzalez, and Joanna Aguilar Hernandez.
Recipients from Mission Vista High School’s class of 2019 were Emily Van Vreeswyk, Elennah Hernandez, and Mason Houskeeper.
Rancho Buena Vista High Counselor Colleen Williams, who is retiring this year, introduced scholarship winners graduating from Rancho Buena Vista High School: Makena Leonard, Anthony Guzman, and Genevieve Lambert.
Guajome Park Academy scholarship recipients were introduced by Superintendent Kevin Humphries: Lauren Lacandazo Ventura, Sarah St. Holland, and Marcial De Santiago.
Principal Phil Lutgen introduced the scholarship winner from North County Trade Tech: Kailani Ramirez.
Maj. Gen. Raymond Murray High School graduate Julia Jensen was introduced by Counselor Dana Templin.
In closing, Linda Story shared her heart-felt thanks all the recipients and adult representatives for attending this inspirational event. She wished all of the 2019 recipients the best in their future endeavors.
