Cougars Collect 1-0 Win at Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. – In a torrential downpour for the entirety of the game, the Cal State San Marcos men’s soccer powered through with a 1-0 win against Cal State East Bay on Sunday at Pioneer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With the first half winding down, the Cougars were awarded a corner. From the right side, Salazar’s kick found the head of Monroe, who headed the ball into the top left corner of the net from six yards out and gave CSUSM a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute.
The Pioneers tried to make a game of it in the second half with an 8-7 shot advantage and a 4-2 upper hand for corner kicks, but the Cougars’ defense stood firm for the remaining 45 minutes.

QUICK KICKS
CSUSM improves to 3-10-1 (2-5-1 CCAA) while CSUEB drops to 2-11-1 (1-7-0 CCAA).
The Cougars led in shots (20-12), shots on goal (11-3) and corners (5-4).
The Pioneers had four offside calls while the Cougars had none.
Curtis Collazos had a game-high five shots with two on frame.
The goal was Monroe’s second of the year while Salazar earned his second assist.
The Cougars held possession for 54% of the game and spent 56% of its possessions in Pioneer territory.
CSUSM now owns the series lead against CSUEB at 3-2-1 and are now 2-1-1 playing in Hayward.
This was the Cougars’ third consecutive win over the Pioneers – all with a 1-0 score.
The Pioneers extended their losing streak to six games and have now lost 10 of their last 11.
The win was CSUSM’s first on the road this season.
This was the Cougars’ second game of the season with 20-plus shots and 10-plus shots on goal.

The Cougars will return to The Cage for their next-to-last home game of the 2021 season on Friday as they face Cal State Monterey Bay at 3 p.m.
