The City of Vista, through its partner, Urban Corps of San Diego, has been awarded a $21,000 grant by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) to plant trees and construct irrigation along the Buena Vista Park Trail in South Vista. The Urban Corps will plant 60 trees along the entrance to the trail, creating a tree-like canopy. This area is one of the few established trail systems in the City and the addition of the trees, as they grow and mature, will provide shade to trail users.

The grant will also fund installing lateral pipes and other equipment to tap into the park’s existing irrigation system. Once planted, the trees will be maintained by the City of Vista Public Works Department through its annual tree maintenance schedule.

Other trees were planted and weeds and invasive plants removed, approximately three miles away, with a SDG&E Environmental Champions grant in 2020. Over the past year, Vista’s hiking trails have been enhanced with trail improvements and upgrades, such as better trail surfaces, more informational signage, and a new City online parks trail webpage. In addition, the recent opening of the two-mile La Mirada Canyon Trail creates an additional amenity/attraction available to residents, visitors and the nearby Vista Business Park employees.
