On December 26, 2021, a homicide occurred in Vista California and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department identified Roberto Cazares Salgado as the suspect. Later that night, Cazares was spotted in Escondido and led law enforcement on a lengthy vehicle chase until his vehicle was forcibly stopped. Cazares, armed with a handgun, exited his vehicle and there was an exchange of gunfire between Cazares and two Escondido Police Officers. The two officers from the Escondido Police Department were Officer Danny Armenta and Officer Zane Velasquez. Both officers have been police officers for five years. Officer Danny Armenta was shot in the incident and thankfully his bullet proof vest stopped the bullet, preventing him from being seriously injured. Cazares was pronounced dead at Palomar Medical Center following the shooting.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department continues to be the point of contact for the homicide investigation that occurred in Vista, California.
The officer involved shooting investigation is ongoing. The Escondido Police Department will be releasing body worn camera footage of the incident at a future date in accordance with State law.

ACTUALIZACIÓN DEL INCIDENTE DEL OFICIAL INVOLUCRADO EN UN TIROTEO
El 26 de diciembre de 2021 ocurrió un homicidio en Vista, California y el Departamento del Sheriff del Condado de San Diego identificó a Roberto Cazares Salgado como el sospechoso. Más tarde esa noche, Cazares fue visto en Escondido y dirigió a las fuerzas del orden público en una larga persecución vehicular hasta que su vehículo fue detenido por la fuerza. Cazares, armado con una pistola, salió de su vehículo y hubo un intercambio de disparos entre Cazares y dos policías de Escondido. Los dos oficiales del Departamento de Policía de Escondido eran el oficial Danny Armenta y el oficial Zane Velásquez. Ambos oficiales han sido policías durante cinco años. El oficial Danny Armenta recibió un disparo en el incidente y, afortunadamente, su chaleco antibalas detuvo la bala, evitando que sufriera lesiones graves. Cazares fue declarado muerto en Palomar Medical Center después del tiroteo.
