How can the City of Carlsbad best deliver on those things most important to the community over the next five years? The City Council is asking for input on that question as it develops the city’s first comprehensive strategic plan.
The strategic plan will be focused on the nine core values of the Carlsbad Community Vision, with a focus on the following themes identified by the City Council:
Economic vitality
Sustainability and the environment
Community character
Quality of life and safety
Organizational excellence and fiscal health
One of the first steps in the planning process is gathering community input. Here’s how you can help:
Take an online survey to answer three open-ended questions based on themes from the Community Vision.
Share your ideas to an online idea wall, where you can also see ideas that others have added and comment on them.
Attend one of two virtual workshops with city staff on Jan. 27 or Feb. 1 where you can talk about your ideas and hear ideas from other residents.
The strategic plan replaces the City Council’s annual goal setting process, during which City Council members would let staff know what projects and initiatives were most important for the coming year. By developing a five-year plan, the City Council can better align resources around its most important priorities while ensuring day to day city services continue to be delivered at a high level. The strategic plan will include performance measures and a detailed work plan that will be updated each year.
Next steps
The City Council will meet March 17 for its second planning workshop.
At that time staff will share the community input gathered as well as input from city staff with expertise in each of the areas identified.
At the March City Council workshop, City Council members will also identify priorities for next fiscal year’s budget, which must be approved by June 30, 2022.
