The Sheriff’s Vista Station will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on January 28, 2022 from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at an unspecified location in Vista. In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol/drug involved collisions, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the road, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.
All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. In 2021, San Diego County had a record number of DUI-related deaths since the data first started being recorded two decades ago. Additionally, 19% of all fatal collisions involve an unlicensed driver. This DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint is being held to reduce those tragedies, as well as ensuring motorists have a valid driver’s license.
A major component of these checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers. A DUI checkpoint is a proven method for achieving these goals. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the Vista Station’s Traffic Division believes motorists can be deterred from drunk and/or drugged driving. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
The Sheriff’s Vista Station wants to remind you that DUI doesn’t just mean booze. Driving high or medicated is also DUI. Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked, and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested. Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
