Pennington Named CCAA Golfer of the Year

CHICO, Calif. – Coming off his win at the CCAA Championship last week, Cal State San Marcos men’s golfer Matt Pennington has been named the 2022 CCAA Golfer of the Year, announced the by the conference office on Tuesday.

Pennington was named to the All-CCAA first team while Matthew Moss was named an honorable mention.

This season, Pennington led the team with a program-record 71.60 scoring average. The redshirt freshman set a new program record with three tournament wins in a single season, including recording CSUSM men’s golf’s first-ever CCAA championship win.

Trailing by three-strokes after day one, Pennington posted a 5-under 67 in the second round to take a three-stroke lead going into the final round of the CCAA Championships. The Carlsbad native turned in an even-par 72 in the final round to win by four strokes and finish with a 2-under 214.

Moss had CSUSM’s second-best scoring average for the year at 74.00. The redshirt junior had one win on the ledger as he opened the season with a CSUSM record 7-under 203 at the Sonoma State Invitational. His other top-five finish came at the Bay Invitational where he took second to go 1-2 with Pennington. He concluded the year with one CCAA Golfer of the Week nod. This is Moss’ first All-CCAA honor.

The Cougars, who are ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA West Regional poll, are waiting for the announcement of the West Region field which will be posted on NCAA.com on Friday, April 22 by a press release.
