Fatal Traffic Collision Between a Motorcycle Rider and Bicyclist

CARLSBAD, Calif. – On August 15, at approximately 1 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was notified about a traffic collision on Carlsbad Boulevard near Palomar Airport Road.

Arriving officers located a motorcyclist with a passenger that had collided with a bicyclist. The preliminary investigation has revealed that the motorcyclist was being pursued northbound on Carlsbad Boulevard by a State Parks Officer for excess speed and reckless operation of the motorcycle when the collision occurred.

The 28-year-old male motorcyclist was transported to a local area hospital with serious injuries.

The 22-year-old female passenger of the motorcycle was also transported to a local area hospital with serious injuries.

A male bicyclist died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing. Carlsbad Boulevard southbound at Palomar Airport Road and northbound at Island Way will be closed while officers conduct the traffic investigation. The criminal aspects of the investigation and any charges pending for the driver of the motorcycle will be handled by the State Parks Department.
