CHICO, Calif. – Coming off its best season as an NCAA Division II member, the Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team was picked to finish second in the 2022-23 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll on Thursday.
The Cougars tallied 127 points in the poll behind unanimous favorite Cal State San Bernardino’s 144 points and 12 first-place votes. Chico State took third in the poll with 115.
Tying for fourth in the poll with 82 points was Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills while Stanislaus State took sixth with 81 points and Cal Poly Humboldt placed seventh with 80 points.
The bottom part of the field included Cal State Monterey Bay with 60 points, Cal State East Bay and Cal State LA with 51 points, San Francisco State with 41 points and Sonoma State with 22 points.
Last season, CSUSM made its first NCAA West Regional appearance after capturing its first CCAA Tournament Championship. The Cougars placed third in the regular season with 13-4 CCAA record while posting an overall record of 20-5. CSUSM was ranked as high as No. 4 in the NABC Division II Coaches Poll.
CSUSM returns All-CCAA first-team guard Jayce McCain and second-team guard Greg Milton III to its 2022-23 roster.
The Cougars will begin the new campaign on the road at Saint Martin’s on Nov. 11 in Lacey, Washington.
