A suspect has been identified in the investigation of a phone threat made toward a North County high school.
On January 13 just before 8:30 a.m., the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department was made aware of an anonymous threat of violence at Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista. The school resource deputy along with deputies and detectives from the Vista Sheriff’s Station immediately responded to the campus. Rancho Buena Vista High School was placed on “secure campus” status, which meant students and staff were safely indoors. At the same time, deputies conducted a security sweep of the campus. Once the school was deemed safe, classes resumed as normal.
During the course of investigation, Sheriff’s Investigators discovered the anonymous caller made the threat using an app on their cell phone to disguise where they were calling from. Investigators were able to locate the origin of the call and determine the caller was a staff member.
Investigators developed probable cause to arrest Alma Cacho (DOB 8/11/1970) for making the threat. The case has been forwarded to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
The safety of our school children is a priority for the Sheriff’s Department and we take all such threats seriously. In recent months, the Vista Sheriff’s Station has responded to several school threats. Multiple suspects were identified in these cases. The Sheriff’s Department works directly with the District Attorney’s Office to prosecute these crimes.
