Almost two years ago, while on a hunting and buying trip in Bali for the David Alan Collection of Solana Beach during the depth of the Covid recession, David Alan Bardwick found a need he could not ignore. Covid ended virtually all travel to Bali. Tourism, being the main generator of income on the island, collapsed and most people lost their jobs.
Bardwick discovered Balinese friends and their families were going hungry. To underscore the devastation, in May 2021 Bardwick received an email with two photographs: one of a garden snail in a rice field and the other, a bamboo tree shoot. There was only a one-word caption, “Dinner.”
THE UNSEEN PEOPLE OF BALI, follows Bardwick on an inward journey that takes him beyond his comfort zone to a place where he discovers the ‘oneness’ of all. Fear of failure and how to provide the funds for the greatest need, food, brought him to a point where he had to choose. Do this or not?
Bardwick made a hero’s choice…he started by funding the Bali project himself. He asked Balinese people to volunteer and a dear friend, Tony Van Den Hout to manage and photograph the day-to-day encounters and deliveries to those in need.
THE UNSEEN PEOPLE OF BALI book is illuminated with over 200 astonishing photographs that virtually take the reader with Bardwick and the volunteers as they make their deliveries to these beautiful and dignified people.
All who are in service and support of THE UNSEEN PEOPLE OF BALI have transformed in ways they never imagined. 100% volunteers, no one receives monetary compensation.
“The people of Bali have given me so much, I’m grateful I can, in part, return to them through this book.” David Alan Bardwick
Readers’ Favorite gave THE UNSEEN PEOPLE OF BALI a five-star review. Below is a portion of the review: “The author’s intent to focus on personal stories and the impact of individual interactions is a compelling approach that touches the heart and encourages empathy. Through engaging storytelling and imagery, the author honors the lives of those in need while inspiring readers to consider their capacity to make a positive impact. Highly recommended for those seeking a moving and inspiring tale of compassion and the human spirit in the face of adversity.”
