SAN DIEGO – August 28, 2023 – Solutions for Change is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to solving the root cause of homelessness by empowering families to end dependency. The organization finds meaningful ways to solve community needs where their current students and their graduates, or Overcomers, collaborate together to form impactful differences. Recently, both Solutions for Change students and Overcomers joined hands for a remarkable two-day community service event on July 27th and 28th.

The event was a part of their Serve to Solve projects, an embodiment of Solutions for Change’s unique philosophy of not just “serving to serve,” but “serving to solve” the most challenging issues and problems faced by our communities. These projects allow for students and Overcomers of the organization to help meet community needs. Some previous Serve to Solve Projects include Sleep in Heavenly Peace: where students and Overcomers helped build beds for children, as well as helping Anthem Church deep clean and set up for an event, opening a thrift store where proceeds go toward programs for low-income families and many more projects.

As the name suggests, Solutions for Change has long been recognized as a trailblazer in the fight to solve family homelessness. The group deploys a ground up, community-based and social enterprise-driven approach that sees homelessness as primarily a consequence of misdiagnosed causative triggers rather than simply a housing access issue. By seeing homelessness as a people issue versus simply a housing one, Solutions for Change developed and refined a unique set of programmatic differentiators. With over two decades of testing and continuous improvement, these distinct programs create an optimally healthy environment where families live, learn, grow and transform their lives, with 74% of their academy students achieving long-term transformation.

The heart of the Serve to Solve vision lies in its extraordinary ability to transform the lives of once dependent and hopeless families and then transition them into becoming the volunteers who solve our communities’ toughest problems. By bringing together Solutions for Change’s resilient Overcomers – families who have successfully crushed The Churn of homelessness – these Serve to Solve projects evolve into powerful catalysts for positive societal shifts.

“Serve to Solve projects become a beacon of hope when the toughest issues faced by our communities intersect with the sheer determination of our Overcomers,” said Chris Megison, President and CEO at Solutions for Change.

“Through this innovative approach, we are not only crushing The Churn of family homelessness but also redefining how society perceives and addresses deep-seated issues like dependency and homelessness.”

Continuing their mission to drive community betterment, Solutions for Change hosts a Backpack Drive throughout the month of August every single year before the school year starts. This initiative aims to provide backpacks filled with school supplies for the children of Solutions for Change’s Overcomers – families who have triumphed over homelessness, demonstrating the potential of the Serve to Solve approach.
