As one of the fastest growing cities in North County, the City of San Marcos has long been focused on ensuring housing equity for all income levels by prioritizing affordable housing development. This intentional focus is aimed at ensuring that there is a place for everyone in San Marcos, particularly as the County of San Diego grapples with being one of the nation’s most expensive regions to live in.

Since 1989, San Marcos has partnered with affordable housing developers to create 34 unique affordable developments, building 2,347 units of high-quality housing for residents. This has resulted in the total volume of affordable housing units in San Marcos being more than twice the number of units in most of the neighboring North County communities.

“By continuously building affordable housing units over the last three decades, the city has achieved a remarkable milestone with over seven percent of its entire housing stock now affordable, deed-restricted housing,” explained the City of San Marcos Mayor Jones.

Deed-restricted housing enables the city to closely regulate these homes for 99 years, which ensures accessibility for all residents by law.
