On 11/18/2023 the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) was contacted by the parents of a 13-year-old female after the mother located her daughter, in a vehicle, at Guajome Lake Park in Oceanside, with an adult male. The mother noticed inappropriate activity was taking place and removed her daughter from the vehicle and confronted the suspect.
A preliminary investigation revealed the male, later identified as 27-year-old Conner Chanove, a Carlsbad resident, is employed by the Vista Unified School District (VUSD) as a substitute teacher. Chanove’s additional employment history includes the following: Currently a coach for the all-girls Seaside Water Polo Club based out of Carlsbad, was previously employed as a lifeguard for the City of Encinitas, and was previously employed as an open-water lifeguard for the City of Carlsbad.
Oceanside Detectives attempted to arrest Chanove on the night the crime was reported, but were unable to locate him. On the evening of 11/20/2023 Oceanside police detectives located Chanove and placed him under arrest. A search warrant was executed at his Carlsbad residence. Chanove was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on multiple charges with a bail set at $1,000,000.
