VISTA, CA — On Saturday, January 27th, 2024, Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland successfully hosted its 18th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Event and Walk at the United Methodist Church of Vista. The event, which began at 10:00 AM, brought together students, community members, leaders, advocates, and elected officials to raise awareness about the critical issue of human trafficking.
Guest speakers included County Supervisor Jim Desmond, Assemblywoman Laurie Davies, and Deputy Mayor Katie Melendez. Some notable attendees included Vista Mayor John Franklin, Vista Council Members Corinna Contreras and Dan O’Donnell, along with Vista Fire Chief Gerard Washington.
Assemblywoman Laurie Davies highlighted the gravity of the human trafficking crisis in California, stating, “California has the largest human trafficking in the United States.” She discussed recent legislative efforts, including the bipartisan agreement on Bill SB14, aimed at classifying trafficking a minor as a serious felony. Davies also took a moment to recognize Kaye Van Nevel, head of the Soroptimist International of Vista Human Trafficking Committee, commending her outstanding advocacy for the safety of women and children and her relentless pursuit of a safer community.
San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond addressed the potential dangers young people face through social media exploitation leading to human trafficking. Supervisor Desmond announced his commitment to promoting education about human trafficking in schools, emphasizing the importance of teaching students to identify grooming tactics and potential dangers.
Deputy Mayor Katie Melendez delivered a speech on the need for consumer awareness and corporate responsibility in the supply chain of consumer goods. She highlighted the reality of labor trafficking in the production of clothing, pledging to advocate for corporate accountability and supply chain transparency. “As a consumer, I want to empower other consumers to be aware of what you purchase and what you contribute to,” stated Deputy Mayor Melendez.
Following the introduction and speeches, the symbolic 1 ½ mile walk from Melrose to Sunset and back commenced, with Vista Mayor John Franklin leading the way. The 2023 Vista Strawberry Festival Queen, Serenity Serda, and members of the Miss Bonsall Court proudly held a banner reading “Help Stop Human Trafficking”, heading the march, symbolizing the community’s commitment to taking significant strides against human trafficking.
This year’s walk was a success, drawing a significant turnout of participants. Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland extends its gratitude to all participants, speakers, and sponsors for their unwavering support in the fight against human trafficking.
