Fire season is upon us, and we’re seeing several fires burning throughout the state. I want to thank our firefighters for their tremendous work last week during the Grove Fire and for all the others out there protecting us. You are the heroes who run to protect us at a moment’s notice.
Last week, I had the opportunity to visit the new Oceanside Fire Station 1, a critical facility for our community’s safety. It was a proud moment to see the impact of our efforts, as our office successfully secured $140,000 in Neighborhood Reinvestment Program (NRP) grant funds to support this essential service. These funds are vital in ensuring that our first responders have the necessary tools and resources to respond effectively to emergencies and keep our community safe. The new station not only enhances our fire department’s capabilities but also reflects our ongoing commitment to public safety and preparedness in North County.
National Night Out is a fantastic opportunity to support our police and build stronger community ties. It’s a national campaign that promotes police-community partnerships, which is so important in today’s world. Join the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department on August 6th from 5-7 p.m. at the Vista Civic Center, or the Oceanside Police Department from 4-8 p.m. at 2855 Mission Ave. Both events offer a fun family night with freebies, police demonstrations, performances, music, and more.
The first 500 guests at the Oceanside event will even get a free meal. It’s a great chance to come together, enjoy the evening, and show our support for law enforcement.
In 2021, the Board of Supervisors approved a plan to legalize Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKOs). This ordinance has created economic opportunities for small-scale, home-cooking businesses, legalizing the sale of homemade food, which was previously prohibited. Now that the program is running, I want to share a fantastic opportunity with you.
The Cook Alliance is offering a free virtual training course called Cook Academy, specifically designed for current and prospective MEHKO operators. Applications are now being accepted for the September cohort. Those who complete the course may be eligible for a $3,000 grant from The Cook Alliance to support their MEHKO business. The application period for the fall cohort is currently open, and applicants who apply by the early deadline of July 31st will receive first priority. However, rolling admissions will continue after that.
At our last Board of Supervisors meeting, we honored Frederick W. Pierce IV, who recently passed away. Pierce was the president and CEO of Pierce Education Properties, recognized as a leader and visionary in the student housing industry. He was known for his dedication to quality, student well-being, and innovation. His compassionate leadership and commitment to philanthropy significantly impacted students’ lives. Fred Pierce will be greatly missed, and we extend our condolences to his family and the Pierce Education Properties team.
