Prom-Themed Exhibit at Cannon Art Gallery

The City of Carlsbad is hosting Prom Dress: Seventeen on Being 17 now through June 17 at William D. Cannon Art Gallery, located in the Carlsbad City Library complex at 1775 Dove Lane. Admission is free.

Prom Dress features the work of 17 female artists who evoke and interpret being 17 years old through the great American tradition of prom. The artists explore this teenage rite of passage and all of its uncertainty, excitement, doubt and hype.

The exhibit features work by Maite Benito Agahnia, Manuelita Brown, Diana Carey, Bronle Crosby, Susan Darnall, Ellen Dieter, Kaori Fukuyama, Julia C R Gray, Diane Hall, Kathleen Kane-Murrell, Kathy McChesney, Lori Mitchell, Gillian Moss, Alison Haley Paul, Julia San Roman, Christine Schwimmer, Gail Titus, Theresa Vandenberg Donche and Brenda York.
The Cultural Arts Office is partnering with the Carlsbad High School Film Academy as part of this exhibit to present Focus on Local Young Filmmakers, a showcase featuring prom-themed film shorts by young filmmakers on May 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium. Admission is free. The student films will be shown in the Cannon Art Gallery beginning May 4.
A Family Open Studios is being hosted, in conjunction with the exhibit, on May 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This hands-on art making event is designed for all ages. All materials and workspace are provided.
William D. Cannon Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.
