Koko McDowell
I have to admit, I had no expectations for this play. I was told it was a comedy, so I was hoping I would laugh. My mother accompanied me today, and I was really concerned about her enjoying the play because she doesn’t have a sense of humor, which she wholeheartedly admits. Well, I believe we started laughing before the play even started and we continued until the curtains closed at the end. So, let’s start from the beginning…..
My recommendation is to arrive early for the show. Without spoiling it for you, the play begins before the play begins *wink wink*. There was a great energy in the room as crew members were scurrying about. With this constant movement, my mom and I found ourselves sucked into the moment. Crowd participation was encouraged, which was not expected at all, but the laughs surely started before the first act.
Once the play began, the cast made great use of the space, literally utilized the entire stage, building an upper room and even creating a focal point in front of the curtain. The set was very appropriate and worked beautifully with the antics that ensued throughout the production. The use of lights and sound added to the wonderful humor and created that dramatic affect they were seeking, literally. The use of interchangeable props added an element of surprise and wonder, which was perfect for the production. At one point, I honestly believed something was actually broken and was concerned for one of the actors, but after a few lines, I realized it was all a part of the play. This subtle suspense kept me engaged.
Without giving too much away, the ”Sandras” were pretty hilarious. One scene with Max and Trevor was gross, but it was apparent they were owning their character. The entire crew did a great job! The roles were believable, yet there was space for spontaneity when needed. Toward the end of the play, an audience member’s phone rang. The timing was so perfect, Robert, Kenneth Gray, was able to react to the phone ringing within his scene and did not skip a beat. It was spontaneous and flawless.
A few times I found myself with tears in my eyes from laughing. To my enjoyment, my mom even laughed throughout the play. There is a running joke with my mom, if she laughs then you know it’s funny. Well, she laughed!
So, if you need a good laugh and like a great play, I highly recommend The Play That Goes Wrong! Check it out this week before it is gone.
