Carlsbad, CA, March 1, 2024 – Army and Navy Academy, a private college preparatory boarding military academy for boys in grades 7-12, is honored to announce the nomination of one of its esteemed educators, retired U.S. Marine Corps Aviator Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Moss, for the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s High School Teacher of the Year award. This nomination is part of the annual Carlsbad Business, Achievement, & Distinction Awards (CBAD’s), which celebrates exceptional achievements within the Carlsbad community.
Scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, from 11 AM to 1:30 PM at the Westin Carlsbad, the CBADs are a testament to the resilience, innovation, and dedication of professionals across various sectors, including education. The awards luncheon is set to be a prestigious event, recognizing the significant contributions of local businesses, educators, and nonprofits to the economic and cultural vibrancy of Carlsbad.
Army and Navy Academy is thrilled to have one of our respected faculty recognized among the finalists for this year’s award. This nomination underscores the Academy’s commitment to excellence in education and its role in shaping future leaders through rigorous academic and character development programs.
In 2018, Army and Navy Academy (ANA) hired Moss, as an Aviation Subject Matter Expert Instructor to develop and implement our four-year aviation program designed to stimulate interest in higher education courses to provide a pathway to aviation and aeronautical careers. The UC-approved Warrior Aviation Program (WAP) connects aviation/aeronautics and STEM courses with other core subjects and prepares Cadets for future careers as certified pilots of commercial and military aircraft as well as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones). Cadets can also receive college credits to help them pursue aviation at a four-year college or university.
Moss came highly qualified as a retired pilot who spent over 21 years in aviation with the U.S. Marine Corps and held numerous positions culminating in his service as the Commanding Officer of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462 at MCAS Miramar, CA.
Future program plans include the design of a robust four-year Army and Navy Aviation Academy within the walls of our school implemented with the Class of 2028. The Aviation Academy will provide a clear path into an aviation college or university and prepare highly competitive candidates for industry pilot training programs offered by airline companies, the FAA, or NTSB. The program will offer dual enrollment opportunities to gain university credit and offer specialized courses in Aeronautical Decision Making, Principles of Aeronautical Science, and Aerospace Safety.
Moss is also pursuing resources to purchase an off-the-shelf kit to provide Cadets the unique opportunity to build an aircraft over multiple years. This would introduce students to aeronautical design engineering and reveal the details under the aircraft’s skin, including mechanical, electrical, and hydraulics.
Bret Schanzenbach, CEO of The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes the importance of the nominees and finalists, stating, “Nominees and finalists for each category have been carefully selected based on their outstanding performance, leadership, and impact within the community. Their achievements serve as a testament to the spirit of excellence that defines the beating heart of businesses in Carlsbad!”
JR Phillips, Founder of Phillips + Co Reality and the 2024 Carlsbad Chamber Chair of the Board expressed his enthusiasm for the event, “We are excited to shine a spotlight on the incredible achievements of businesses in Carlsbad through the 2024 CBADs. This event is a celebration of their hard work, innovation, and commitment to making a positive difference in our community.”
The luncheon will feature a keynote presentation by Tim Wrisley, Owner of Carlsbad Magazine and Wheelhouse Media, celebrating the publication’s long-standing contribution to the Carlsbad community since 2004.
