The biotechnology industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors, with numerous career opportunities that do not necessarily require a four-year college degree. The Biotech pathway will provide our students with the skills and knowledge needed to access these high-demand jobs.
Biotechnology 1 will serve as the entry point for students, covering fundamental concepts in biotechnology, including molecular biology, genetics, and bioethics. Students will engage in laboratory experiments, such as DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, and PCR (polymerase chain reaction). The curriculum will emphasize scientific inquiry, data analysis, and critical thinking skills.
Biotechnology 2 (Capstone),
building on the knowledge gained in the concentrator course, the capstone course will delve deeper into advanced biotechnological techniques and applications. Students will work on projects involving genetic engineering, bioprocessing, and bioinformatics. The course will include a significant hands-on component, with students conducting independent research projects and participating in internships with local biotech firms.
Mira Costa College’s Biomanufacturing bachelor’s degree program develops the skills, abilities, and knowledge students need to work in the unique environment of biological production. It emphasizes the applied, quantitative analysis of biomanufacturing process design and performance to prepare students for employment in technical or quality positions in the manufacturing sector of the biotechnology industry, which includes biotherapeutics, diagnostics, supplies and services, and industrial products.
Through a combination of articulation and dual enrollment options, students in the Biotech pathway may earn up to 6 units of college credits prior to graduation. These credits can be applied towards certifications and/or a college degree. Students in the Biotechnology Pathway can earn micro credentials based upon demonstrated competency in hirable lab skills.
The Biotech Academy will develop the skills, abilities, and knowledge students will need to work in the unique environment of biological production. It will emphasize the applied, quantitative analysis of biomanufacturing process design and performance to prepare students for post-secondary education and employment in technical or quality positions in the manufacturing sector of the biotechnology industry, which includes biotherapeutics, diagnostics, supplies and services, and industrial products.
