Valley Center Art Gallery Fundraiser Event – Great Success!

VCAG Board of Directors L-R: Jim Courter, President, Zee Ryken, Carolyn McGraw, Barbara Scharnau, Treasurer, Gloria Warren, Secretary, PJ Campbell

Valley Center Art Gallery held its premiere fundraising event, sponsored by Cosmic Solar, on Sunday, June 26th at a board member’s private home whose property adjoins the Rancho Guejito. The views from the property were reminiscent of early California.

Over 85 guests attended to participate in a silent auction of 24 works of art donated by 16 local area artists. Some of the more recognizable artists’ works included those of: Joe Garcia, Cathy Carey, David Miller, Barbara Scharnau, Gloria Warren, Julie Schneider-Ljubenkov, Carolyn McGraw, Mike Adams, Judith Shadzi, Sandy Zelasko and more. George Speer of Dos Valles Garden Club added to the artistic ambiance with exceptional floral displays. Artwork ranged in price from $150-$3,000 per item. There was something for everyone.

Attendees enjoyed scrumptious canapés, sandwiches, steak tar-tar, shrimp and a variety of delectable delights. All food was supplied in part by Chef Will and Valley Center’s Country Junction Deli; desserts were offered by Jimbo’s. Musical entertainment was delightful and made available by Greg Douglass, guitarist and Sheldon Rosenbaum, pianist.

There was an on-going queue for the Rincon Reservation Road Brewery beer provided and poured by, Rik Mazzetti. The donated Rancho Guejito Vineyard wine was enjoyed by many with pure satisfaction and some remarked they planned on visiting the vineyard.

Guests arrived with anticipation and left with an over-the-top experience. In addition to the incredible art offerings, visitors received generous gift bags with items from Cosmic Solar, Valley Center Nursery, Six Goats, and Countryside Veterinary Hospital. Some lucky ticket holders went home with additional gifts from Pauma Vista Vineyards, Trader Joe’s, Oak Moon Kitchen and others. It was Christmas in June for everyone.

Bill Toone, Founder of ECOLIFE and his wife, Sunni Black were among the attending celebrities of the event. Toone’s newly released book, On the Wings of the Condor was another perk for guests who took home a complimentary autographed copy.

Two of the event guests’ remarks summed it up perfectly, “Valley Center Art Gallery’s Board of Directors proved to the community that the time has come to have our own art gallery. The experience today is one that you might expect to have in Rancho Santa Fe, but it’s right here! Bravo.” “Extraordinary…that’s how I would describe the Valley Center Art Gallery’s premiere fundraising event. Any group that can produce an event of this nature will realize the gallery.”

President, Jim Courter of the Valley Center Art Gallery proudly stated, “We trust that this event demonstrated to the community that we are serious, dedicated, connected and capable of establishing a much-needed art gallery for the Valley Center area and beyond.”

Valley Center Art Gallery Board of Directors is very grateful for the success of this event and for the on-going support of the community at large. Please visit their website, Valley Center Art Gallery to discover how you can volunteer, donate art or become a founding member, today. DONATE

Another Problem for Agriculture

0

By Assemblymember Marie Waldron

California agriculture produces one-third of the country’s vegetables, two-thirds of its fruits and nuts, and generates
around $50 billion in annual revenue. We are the nation’s breadbasket, and we help feed much of the world by
exporting over $20 billion in agricultural commodities every year. According to the San Diego County Farm Bureau,
the County’s agricultural production ranks 19th out of over 3,000 counties nationwide. Much of that agriculture is
centered right here, in the 75th Assembly District.

But agriculture is vulnerable, dependent on weather, unstable markets, fertilizer costs/availability, and many other
factors. We’re in a drought, something that’s not uncommon, but for decades the state has taken no action to
increase water storage. If that isn’t enough, now there’s another problem – cyber and ransomware attacks on
agricultural companies. Throughout the U.S., Federal data shows that cyberattacks are increasing, with an estimated
47,000 nationwide, resulting in payouts totaling $1.2 billion across all sectors of the economy.

With more growers and livestock companies using precision farming and tech in their operations, this could become
a common issue. In April, the FBI put the AG industry on alert after a series of cyberattacks targeting grain
cooperatives. Criminals may consider agriculture an easy target, one that reaps immediate rewards. For example,
disrupting seed supplies during planting season, or shutting down a dairy’s operations creating spoilage problems,
can generate quick payouts from victims to criminals.

The FBI is recommending increased AG Cyber-Security. The measures include:
 Backup data regularly and keep password-protected copies offline
 Identify critical functions and devise plans for operating manually
 Install operating system updates and patches as they become available
 Use anti-virus and anti-malware software
 Use multifactor authentication when possible
 Use complex passwords and change them regularly

The FBI’s notification is available at: https://www.ic3.gov/Media/News/2022/220420-2.pdf

Agriculture is vital to our state and local economies. As an Assemblymember representing one of California’s leading agricultural regions, I will continue to do all I can to support this irreplaceable industry.

Assemblymember Marie Waldron, R-Valley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

“The Open House will give North County residents and potential Corpsmembers an opportunity to see our facility and learn first-hand about the programs that Urban Corps has to offer,” said Kyle Kennedy, CEO, Urban Corps of San Diego County. “Urban Corps has been working in North County for years, but it has not been easy to recruit since our headquarters is in San Diego. I hope that this new North County location will change that and we will be able to reach more youth who want to receive a paycheck while earning their high school diploma and learning job skills that will help the community and put them on the road to success.”

Urban Corps of San Diego County is a certified local conservation corps that provides young adults paid job training and community service. Corpsmembers learn job skills while planting trees, restoring habitats, removing graffiti, recycling, landscaping and working in construction. For Corpsmembers that need a high school diploma, they attend school one day a week at Urban Corps Charter School – an onsite WASC-accredited charter high school to earn their diploma.

With their participation, Corpsmembers receive a paycheck and additional services through the Corpsmember Development program that helps prepare them for their future including career counseling, life skills workshops, case management and one-on-one assistance with resumes, college and job applications and job placement.

“I hope anyone that wants to learn more about Urban Corps will drop by and join us on July 14,” added Kennedy. “It will be a great opportunity to see the new facility, ask questions and learn about all the benefits Urban Corps offers to the community.”

Fourth of July DUI Patrols

0

Watch for increased impaired driving patrols this holiday weekend.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department wants you to celebrate responsibly this Independence Day by not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Sheriff’s Deputies will be conducting increased impaired driving patrols on Monday, July 4th and throughout the holiday weekend.

In 2021, deputies arrested 909 people for impaired driving in San Diego County. So far in 2022, nearly 450 people have been arrested for driving under the influence by the Sheriff’s Department.

Driving under the influence doesn’t just mean alcohol. It also means driving under the influence of prescription drugs or marijuana. If you do drink, be sure to have a designated driver, ride sharing service or taxi ready.
VIDEO

Watch our video on the high price of impaired driving by clicking on the above photo or this link. An impaired driving arrest and conviction can cost more than $15,000 in legal and court fees.

Remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

Funding for the Fourth of July weekend impaired driving patrols is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
