CARLSBAD — A pair of candidates are vying for the District 2 seat on the City Council with varying visions for the city.

Tyler Collins and Kevin Shin are running for the seat, which is currently held by Councilwoman Carolyn Luna, who was appointed after Keith Blackburn was elected mayor in 2020. Collins jumped into the race this summer after Kevin Sabellico and Maureen Muir both withdrew. Shin, meanwhile, entered the race last year.

Collins, who is the city’s Housing Commission chairman, said he entered the race as he felt voters deserve a choice rather than a race with an unopposed candidate. Shin, a retired Marine and Culver City fire captain is also a businessman and has been campaigning for more than one year and said he wants to be a voice for small businesses, among other issues.
