With the proposed rate increases, the average monthly water and wastewater bill for a single-family home would increase a total of $24.78 over the next three years. Carlsbad’s rates would continue to remain below the average in the region. If approved, the first phase of increased rates would take effect March 1, 2022.
Proposed water and wastewater rate increases table
Commercial rates vary widely based upon water use and type of business. The Carlsbad Municipal Water District will be reaching out to its largest customers directly. Residents with questions on individual rate increases can find more information at the links below, or can call 760-602-2420.
Rate increases are needed to cover the increased cost to buy imported water from the San Diego County Water Authority and treat the wastewater at the Encina Wastewater Authority, along with major investments needed to maintain aging pipes, pumps, treatment facilities and other infrastructure. The cost of some supplies and materials needed to maintain Carlsbad’s infrastructure have also doubled in recent years.
The rates customers pay for water, recycled water and wastewater cannot be higher than the actual cost to provide these critical services.
Information on how to protest the proposed rate increases, along with the complete cost of service studies used to determine rates are available on the city’s website. Residents can find out what water district they live in on this map.
Next Steps
