Carlsbad Community Invited to Help Choose Artist for New Public Art in the Barrio

As part of the City of Carlsbad’s Art in Public Places Program, the city will install new public art that will be featured in the Barrio at Pine Avenue and Harding Street, one of the gateways into the Barrio, Carlsbad’s oldest neighborhood.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, a Public Art Advisory Subcommittee made up of two community members, two members of the city’s Arts Commission and one arts professional, will meet for the first time to review qualified applications submitted in response to a statewide call for artists qualifications.

The city received nine qualified applications.
Community members can provide input to the subcommittee at the meeting or beforehand via email to arts@carlsbadca.gov.
The subcommittee will discuss and score each application.
The goal is to narrow the field down to three artists who will be invited to make presentations at the next meeting, scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 19.
The selected artist will gather public input to help shape the public art design concept in early 2025.

The city involved the community at the earliest stages of the project’s development to gather feedback about how the new art, which will be placed in the center of a new traffic circle at Pine Avenue and Harding Street, could best reflect the Barrio’s neighborhood identity and cultural and historic heritage. Here is a summary report that includes some of the common themes heard so far, which was used to help inform the call for artists qualifications.
