Carlsbad Traffic Pursuit and Arrest

CARLSBAD, Calif. – On 04/07/2017 at approximately 0314 hours, Officers with the City of Carlsbad Police Department were conducting extra patrol of Sage Creek High School when a suspicious vehicle attempted to make entry into the secured parking lot. The officer attempted to conduct an investigative stop on the vehicle when the driver and solo occupant fled westbound on Cannon Road towards College Boulevard. A short vehicle pursuit ensued until the 30 year old driver, later identified as Matthew Gioia from Oceanside, collided with a tree on Peninsula Drive just east of College Boulevard. Gioia fled on foot, and was eventually taken into custody after a brief struggle with officers. Gioia was transported to the hospital for medical treatment and will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility for felony evading and resisting arrest.
