It’s National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and before I jump into this week’s update, I want to take a minute to honor the commitment, service and sacrifice of these essential workers.
Dispatchers are the first line of communication between people who call for help and the police officers, firefighters and paramedics who respond. We have our own in-house dispatchers in the Carlsbad Police Department, and the Carlsbad Fire Department partners with the North County Dispatch Joint Powers Authority’s communications center for fire and medical emergency dispatch support.
These professionals answer life-threatening calls, dispatch public safety staff and offer life-saving assistance to residents seeking immediate relief 24/7.
Each year, Carlsbad Police Department dispatchers answer more than 110,000 calls, nearly 35,000 of which are 9-1-1 emergency calls.
Even more impressive, nearly 99% of those calls are picked up within 15 seconds, beating the state average.
