OCEANSIDE, Calif.- California Highway Patrol (CHP) investigators arrested a suspect in a November 2023 freeway shooting stemming from a road rage incident on Interstate 5 (I-5) in Oceanside. Brightwel Ojahngoe, 24, of Oceanside, was taken into custody this week and booked into San Diego County Jail – Vista Detention Center, for firing a gun on an occupied vehicle; and 25800(a) PC – carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony.
On Nov. 24, 2023, at approximately 9:17 p.m., the Border Communications Center received a call about a shooting that occurred on northbound I-5, near Mission Avenue. Officers from the CHP’s Oceanside Area office responded to the scene and learned that a highway violence incident had occurred between the occupants of a Dodge Dart and two motorcyclists, during which the passenger of the Dodge Dart pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds at the motorcyclists. None of the shots hit the motorcyclists, but one of the rounds struck the left side of one of the motorcycles, causing damage to the motorcycle. The motorcyclists drove to a safe location and contacted CHP. The suspect vehicle continued to travel northbound on I-5.
After a thorough investigation, it was determined Ojahngoe was the suspected shooter. He was taken into custody by CHP investigators on Jan. 10, without incident. The following day, investigators seized the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.
This investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with additional information about this incident is urged to call Officer R. Nilsen of CHP Oceanside Area at (760) 643-3400.
