The City of Carlsbad will hold a neighborhood workshop Thursday, June 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Buena Vista Elementary School to find out what neighbors would like in a new park being built near the corner of Buena Vista Way and Highland Drive in northwest Carlsbad.

The 3 acre city-owned property is currently home to a long-abandoned water reservoir and had been slated for up to 14 new houses. Neighbors asked the city to consider a park instead. The city was able to make this change in use by incorporating the construction of a park into a set of agreements having to do with lawsuits over the city’s general plan, climate action plan and a proposed development off Poinsettia Lane.

Under the terms of the agreements, the park could include gathering spaces, picnic tables, shade structures, landscaping and a playground. Athletic fields, bright lights, tennis courts and restrooms are not to be part of the park’s design. The park will also not include a dog park or skateboarding park.

A few community members already provided initial input on the park’s design, as part of the lawsuit settlement agreement process. The city is holding a public workshop to ensure all community members have a chance to participate in the park’s planning process.

Background
The new park will be made possible through a set of agreements approved by the Carlsbad City Council in March 2017. The agreements will also ensure the completion of the missing link of Poinsettia Lane, the creation of new trails and the addition of protected habitat in Carlsbad.

Park Timeline & Budget
The park is scheduled for completion in about three years. Lennar Homes will pay approximately $3.4 million towards construction of the park.
