Emergency Volunteer Training

Carlsbad residents interested in joining the 2018 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Academy are invited to attend an information session. CERT volunteers provide emergency preparedness and response assistance to their neighbors and community. Volunteers receive over 24 hours of free training, including fire safety, disaster medical operations, and light search and rescue.

The CERT information session takes place on Monday, Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m. held at the City of Carlsbad Safety Training Center, 5750 Orion St.

Interested residents must register online at www.VolunteerinCarlsbad.net and choose Disaster Preparedness & Response – City of Carlsbad.
Those selected to participate in the CERT Academy must complete a Live Scan background check and medical evaluation signed by a doctor prior to the start of the academy.
Carlsbad CERT Academy training begins Monday, Feb. 12, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and runs for 10 weeks. Class size is limited. Team members must be Carlsbad residents and 18 years old or older.
All CERT academy candidates must first attend the CERT information session.

According to City of Carlsbad Emergency Preparedness Manager, David Harrison, CERT volunteers played an important role in the response to the Poinsettia Fire in May 2014 and the recent Lilac Fire, performing a variety of support activities in the city’s Emergency Operations Center and at temporary evacuation points and shelters.
