Empowerment — a new public mural by Latin artist Sasha Primo — will begin taking shape in late August along the renewed Creek Trail near Washington Park in Escondido, California. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the City of Escondido, the Escondido Community Foundation, and the California Center for the Arts, the project is part of a broader initiative to transform underutilized public spaces into inclusive, people-centered environments. As the first artistic intervention along this revitalized corridor, Empowerment will celebrate the city’s diverse identity, natural beauty, and collective spirit through community participation and vibrant, symbolic imagery.

“As I become more involved with the intervention at Escondido Creek, I feel increasingly compelled to reflect on my own connection with nature. It’s easy to get lost in the routine of city life — but when do we truly take time to regenerate our environment? I hope my murals inspire a moment of pause, offering a path that is both healing and forward-looking.” – Sasha Primo

“The California Center for the Arts, Escondido is proud to partner on this transformative project that brings art, culture, and community together in such a meaningful way. Empowerment not only beautifies the Escondido Creek Trail, but also amplifies the voices and stories of our diverse community. This mural reflects our shared commitment to making the arts accessible and central to everyday life in Escondido.” – California Center for the Arts, Escondido

At its core, Empowerment is a visual celebration of unity, resilience, and everyday joy. The mural’s central image features a family framed by a radiant backdrop of symbolic forms. Their faces, gestures, and presence emerge from stories gathered through community conversations, capturing a spirit of belonging and continuity across generations. The surrounding environment, filled with vibrant local flora and fauna, acts not only as decoration but as a living language — expressing the rhythms of Escondido’s seasons, its ecosystem, and the shared values of care, identity, and hope. The result is a multi-layered artwork that invites viewers to pause, reflect, and see themselves in the heart of their city.

Technically, the mural will be created using latex and aerosol paints on concrete. It will span approximately 50 feet in length, reaching up to 20 feet in height on the main wall and 15 feet on each side of the creek slopes. The color palette combines warm and earthy tones with vibrant pastels — including shades of turquoise and pink suggested by local residents — to reflect the festive spirit of the community.

Currently in development through a community-driven design process, the mural will reflect the shared values and stories gathered from residents. Inspired by Southern California’s rich biodiversity, the composition will feature local birds—such as the hummingbird and red-tailed hawk—as well as native plants, pollinators, and symbolic family elements. Rather than a fixed image, the mural evolves through collective dialogue, ensuring the final design embodies the voices, cultural references, and aspirations of the community.

The project begins with a site visit and community workshop at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido (CCAE) from August 20–23. Mural painting will take place over three weeks, starting mid-September and continuing through mid-October 2025.
