Escondido Firefighters participated in the annual San Diego County Wildland Exercise that was held May 3-5 at the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station at Scripps Ranch. Approximately 750 firefighters from throughout San Diego County came together over the course of the week for training that included emergency communications, firefighter survival, structure defense and hose deployments under simulated emergency conditions. This training event is a key element in maintaining firefighter preparedness as we move into the hot, dry summer months and the region’s traditional fire season.
On May 4, at approximately 3:35 p.m., the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received a report of a burn injury at a commercial building at the 1900 block of Commercial Street in Escondido. The first arriving Fire Captain found two adult males both with serious burn injuries and light smoke coming from the front of the building. A full structure fire response was requested. Due to the potential for the fire to spread, a second alarm was also requested but soon cancelled as the incident stabilized. The fire was fully contained and controlled, and two civilian workers who were burned during the initial phase of the fire were transported to the UCSD Regional Burn Center, one by helicopter and one by ground ambulance. Escondido Police units provided road closures and assistance was provided by San Marcos Fire Department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
On May 5, our ladder truck crew provided assistance to the Escondido Christian School by repairing the top of their flagpole. The students were able to watch the truck company set up the aerial platform and now the flags at the school are flying proudly!
