Local Artist Honors PD
Artist Christine Ippolito presented a pro-law enforcement art piece she created to Chief Varso and Captain Toth this past week. The piece, entitled “Back the Blue,” is meant to refresh the basic idea of patriotism. It is a 4’ x 8’ ACM panel that was unveiled by the Escondido Alley Art Project. The artist stated that “we all need to ‘back the blue’ or America will be in tatters, as reflected at the bottom of our flag.” She also stated that these men and women are human and engage the harsher side of life with their own lives. The title in red represents “a split vital force of our protectors, their blood.” Christine also gifted the police department with a miniature version of her art to display at the station. The miniature version has been hung in Police Administration at the Police and Fire Headquarters.

PAL Takes 52 Kids on Ocean Fishing Trip
On Saturday, August 26, 52 Orange Glen High School students and 5 chaperones traveled to H&M Landing at Mission Bay. The group had been planning an ocean fishing trip on board the Premier, which the group had chartered with the assistance of the Police Athletic League. The group started with an outdoor safety briefing and rode via school bus to the location. At the dock, students learned how to get a fishing license, how to rent poles and toured the area.

The group went out fishing in the kelp bed areas off Point Loma and were very successful in learning to fish. The group caught 127 rock fish, 8 sheepshead, 1 Calico Bass and 40+ mackerel. In all, 47 of the 52 students caught fish. For 46 of these students, it was their first time catching a fish. There were 6 cases of seasickness, though 3 of those made a comeback to catch fish.

Other significant activities included:
