Seventeen students from two Oceanside high schools will share $100,000 in scholarship funds as recipients of the 2022 City of Oceanside Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Awards. The students will be introduced at the annual Garden Reception, to be held on Friday, May 27, 2022, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the home of Stephen and Janet Lacy. The Garden Reception is the sole fundraising event for the scholarship program; tickets for the evening are $40 per person and are available by calling (760) 722-1234. All funds raised at the Garden Reception go directly to the scholarship program; the City of Oceanside sponsors the program, but no public funds are used. Local business and corporate sponsors provide funds for the reception.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Awards have awarded $1,060,500, given to 389 Oceanside students since 1993. The scholarship program is open to all high school seniors who live in the City of Oceanside regardless of which high school they attend. Applicants must write an essay on how they will apply the life and teachings of Dr. King to their own lives. This essay, plus demonstrated financial need, are the major criteria for the awards. For more information on the scholarship program, call (760) 435-5042 or email mlkscholarship@oceansideca.org.
