Genesis Opera Theatre’s “The Telephone”

Genesis Opera Theatre’s production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s one-act comic English language opera “The Telephone” will take place one day only, June 17, 2023 at 3pm at San Marcos Lutheran Church, 3419 Grand Ave. in San Marcos. The program will open with a brief concert of opera and musical theatre favorites featuring nationally recognized talent from across Southern California.

“The Telephone” is a humorous tale of one man’s wish to marry. Ben comes to visit girlfriend Lucy at her apartment; he wants to propose marriage to her before he leaves on a trip. Despite his attempts to get her attention for sufficient time to ask his question, Lucy is occupied with interminable conversations on the telephone. Not wanting to miss his train, Ben leaves without asking Lucy for her hand in marriage. But Ben will make one last unforgettable attempt.

Soprano Cynthia Leigh and baritone Joshua Wentz, who also co-direct, deliver memorable performances in this delightful comic opera, accompanied by the incomparable Michele Scanlon on the piano.

“The Telephone” is a wonderfully light, funny show with two uniquely distinct personalities, one of whom is impervious to the other’s desires,” says Leigh. “Josh (Wentz) and I have known each other for years and you might say we were made to play these roles together.”
