FATAL HIT AND RUN CRASH IN CARLSBAD

CARLSBAD, Calif.- On Saturday, July 15, 2023, at approximately 2:25 a.m. officers from the California Highway Patrol-Oceanside Area Office responded to reports of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision on the Poinsettia Lane onramp to southbound Interstate 5, in the city of Carlsbad.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. a white Toyota Prius was driving in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, from Poinsettia Lane (onramp). For reasons still under investigation the Toyota collided into a 20-year-old male, from Texas. Following this crash, the Toyota Prius fled the scene.

The California Highway Patrol and the fire/paramedics responded to the scene, where unfortunately, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased. The identity of the deceased will be released through the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

On July 19, 2023, at 12:20 a.m. the driver of the Toyota, Andrew Bryan Dean, was located by investigators from the California Highway Patrol-Oceanside Area Office. Mr. Dean was subsequently arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility, where he faces multiple charges related to this incident including felony hit and run.

It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs contributed to the cause of this collision. The investigation is ongoing, and the CHP is asking anyone who has information or may have witnessed this incident to contact the Oceanside Area CHP office at (760) 643-3400.
