Free paper shredding event offered in San Marcos on April 14

The City of San Marcos and EDCO Recycling & Waste Collection will host a free paper shredding and electronic waste collection event on Saturday, April 14 from 9 am to noon at Palomar College, 1140 W. Mission Road in San Marcos. The event will take place in student parking lot 14 on Mission Road between Comet Circle and the United Methodist Church.

Shredding and e-waste collection
Participants are limited to two bankers boxes (10” x 12” x 15”) per household. Items that should be shredded include legal documents, medical records, financial statements, accounting records, personnel files, audits, bank statements, tax records, receipts/invoices, canceled checks, business plans and credit card numbers.

Unwanted electronics will also be collected including TVs, computer monitors, printers, fax machines, VCRs, etc. However, no household hazardous waste (HHW) material will be accepted.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, identity theft strikes more than 10 million Americans per year and costs American businesses and consumers more than $53 billion per year — not to mention the serious financial and emotional hardships it leaves in its wake. Shredding sensitive documents with account numbers, birth dates, signatures, passwords and PIN numbers is a great step towards avoiding identity theft.

The event will be set up as a drive-thru and drop-off event. Documents will be shredded onsite. EDCO Recycling & Waste Collection is the contract trash hauler for the City of San Marcos.

For more information, call EDCO at (760) 744-2700.
