The City owns and operates the AVO Theater as a cultural arts facility and leases the adjacent restaurant space to the Curbside Café. Built in 1948 as a neighborhood movie house, the AVO Theater was purchased
by the City of Vista and restored to accommodate live performances in 1995.The AVO is a fully-equipped performance venue (with lighting and sound systems) with a 385 seat auditorium, an elevated stage, and back stage dressing rooms with restrooms. The AVO features a concession bar area and large lobby restrooms.
The AVO Theater property has primarily been used for live performances and special events over the past 30 years. Performances include live theater performances, live music, comedy performances and dance performances, with special events such as graduations and private parties.
Past Development and Historical Analyses. A private developer evaluated the AVO Theater property for conversion to a live music and entertainment venue. The analysis included a historical review of the property, and preliminary architectural plans for major improvements to the building, However, due to the costs of this conversion project, the project did not move forward.
