Green Returns to Vista Politics in Mayoral Run

VISTA — Few people champion Vista like Joe Green.

The former councilman is now running unopposed for mayor with a renewed focus on public safety, infrastructure and business development. After stepping away in 2024, Green said he’s returning to offer a more responsive style of governance and to help unify a divided City Council.

In a way, Green’s return is what brought him into politics in the first place. He saw issues not being addressed as residents would like, so Green wants to return to a more responsive style of governance.

“I love the city of Vista and serving the city of Vista,” Green explained about his candidacy. “I always saw myself as a Vistan who can serve the entire city and not just one district. I was elected in 2016 as an at-large councilperson for the whole city, and that was my goal as a councilperson to represent the whole city. I feel like Vista really needs someone to bring the political climate together.”

Regardless, Green is currently running unopposed, although Mayor John Franklin is running for the San Diego County Board of Supervisors’ District 5 seat against San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones and former San Diego County Democratic Party chairman Kyle Krahel. If Franklin loses the primary, he could run for mayor or the District 4 seat in Vista.
