On September 27, 2020 at about 5:07 PM, a male driving a U-Haul van exited the 76 Gas Station located at 485 N. Melrose Drive in Vista. The U-Haul failed to yield to a motorcyclist already traveling westbound on Olive Avenue. The U-Haul struck the motorcycle and caused the motorcycle and rider to slide across the intersection of N. Melrose Drive and Olive Avenue. The motorcycle then struck a vehicle stopped southbound on N. Melrose Drive. Thankfully, the motorcyclist sustained only minor injuries because he was wearing motorcycle protective gear.
The U-Haul driver immediately fled the scene northbound on N. Melrose Drive. There were several witnesses to the collision who helped deputies by providing a description of the U-Haul driver. The Vista Traffic Unit is handling the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers to assist the Sheriff’s Department with identifying the U-Haul driver.
